Electrosabarisation It is quite a challenge to modernise a traditional recipe, and the same can be said of embedding tradition in today?s world. With Guiss Guiss Bou Bess, released in 2016, Senegalese Mara Seck, the bearer of the sabar heritage, his percussionist companion Babacar Diop and French sociologist beat-maker Stephane Costantini together looked to rise to the challenge of their wildest dreams: to create a ?new vision? and give new life to one of the most mystical styles of Teranga. Their Electro Sabar is not just a fusion of ritual percussion and Electro; these three brothers in sound have methodically respected every song and every code, listened to every sound of the drum before adding to it a global rhythm: trap, dubstep, UK garage, drum & bass, bass house, afrobass and kuduro. To preserve the roots of sabar, the exuberant working class quarters of Dakar such as Medina, where Mara grew up, became the laboratory in which to tap into sounds and atmospheres, to record the drums and produce the beats. And to lend to this fiery and sacred mix the pinch of spice it deserves, Brazilian producer and expert in assembling old and new sounds, Chico Correa, gave the finishing touches to this first record. Set Sela, ?to visit? in Wolof, is a spirited and powerful album which, in accordance with the sabar tradition, is above all an invitation to join in a celebration of the people.
