Born in Paris, Xavier Phillips started the cello at the age of 6.
He won several international prizes (Second Prize and Special Prize of Jeunesses Musicales of Belgrade, Special Prize at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition, Third Prize and Special Prize at Rostropovich Competition in Paris and First Prize unanimously in the 1st Competition of Helsinki).
His encounter with Mstislav Rostropovitch proved especially fruitful since it marked the beginning of a long collaboration during which Xavier Phillips received the guidance and encouragement of the master cellist.
Later on, Xavier Phillips performs on the largest international scenes with prestigious orchestras (New York Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, Mariinsky Orchestra, Washington National Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Berliner Symphoniker, Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, BBC Scottish Orchestra, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala) on the invitation of famous conductors such as Mstislav Rostropovich his mentor, but also Riccardo Muti, Christoph Eschenbach, James Conlon, Marek Janowski, Valery Gergiev, Jesus Lopez-Cobos, Vladimir Spivakov, Eliahu Inbal, Kurt Masur.
Amongst his actuality, Xavier Phillips appears in Salle Pleyel in Lalo Concerto with Orchestre de Paris under Paavo Jarvi, he performs with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra (Elgar), Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne (Myaskovsky), BBC Wales Orchestra (Escaich double Concerto), Symphony Orchestra of Seville (Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations), Quebec Symphony Orchestra (Lalo Concerto), Orchestre National d?Ile de France (Dutilleux " Tout un monde lointain "), Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under Fabien Gabel (" Schelomo " by Bloch), Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire (Dvorak).
His eclectic and varied discography is very noticed and warmly welcomed by the critics. His last recording ? dedicated to Dutilleux ?Tout un monde lointain? ? received tremendous critics and was nominated three times at the Grammy Awards 2015.
Xavier Phillips was also nominated as ?Best Instrumental Solo? at the last Grammy Awards.
He prepares on CD the complete chamber music for violin, cello and piano by Beethoven with the violinist Tedi Papavrami and the pianist Francois-Frederic Guy.
The first recording includes Beethoven Complete works for cello and piano (Aparte), and will be released in 2015.
Alongside his work as soloist, Xavier Phillips, is a dedicated teacher (Haute Ecole de Musique de Sion).
